The original Latin word “Universitas” referred to a group of people that formed a unified body or community. In medieval times, the word began to be used to describe institutions of students and teachers chartered by a governing authority, such as a King or Prince.
Much like the origin of our name, we are a unified body of believers chartered by the one true King of all creation to learn about His word and teach it to others. At University Parkway Church of Christ we strive to truly be a Community of Higher Learning.
To glorify God as light unto each other and our community so that all may come to know Him better.
Our building is located in northern Baltimore City at 530 W. University Pkwy. We’re just down the street from the Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus and in between the neighborhoods of Hampden and Roland Park.
The Church has been meeting at our current location since 1947 when the building was completed.
“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.”
We believe that God created everything and that every part of his creation reflects, in some way, who he is. This is most true in the case of his greatest creation: Human Beings. Genesis 1:27 tells us that God created Humans after his own image, making us like him in every way with the only exception being that he is divine and we are not. This means that God gave us free will, the ability to make our own decisions as opposed to being forced into living a certain way.
It wasn’t long before humanity abused the power of free will, however, as the very first humans created, Adam and Eve, chose to disobey God’s one command. Their decision allowed sin, and with it death, to enter the world and separate humanity from God. However, just as sin entered the world through one man (Adam), God saved humanity from sin through one man: Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:12-21)
The University Parkway Church family is made up of sinners saved by the grace of God and the blood of Jesus. We cling to our Savior as a ransomed people whose lives have been turned from selfishness to service by a single act that occurred centuries ago. We believe that God reveals himself to humanity through his inspired word, the Bible, and aim to follow it in the way that we live.
